Nurse Practitioners serve on the front line across the country, in areas ranging from primary care to critical care. They will regularly face questions about appropriateness of care, decision-making capacity, and the complexities of their patients’ care from the beginning of life until the end of life. This presentation reviews the Nursing Code of Ethics, the ethical principles that support clinical decision making, and a practical approach to ethical problem solving. It will also review a simple framework that can help practitioners in evaluating a patient’s decision-making capacity and reviewing competency.
