Botanical dietary supplements generate over a billion dollars a year, and many are accessible as over-the-counter preparations. Often, patients take these vitamin and herbal remedies without informing their nurse practitioner, leaving patients vulnerable to serious adverse effects that occur from unsupervised use of these supplements. Using evidence-based resources, this CE offering discusses the proper use of vitamins and herbal remedies in patient treatment plans. It also discusses contraindications and potential interactions with prescription drugs.
This session includes information on the following considerations when using herbal supplements:
- Glycemic control
- Cardiovascular health
- Neurocognitive disorders
- Obesity
