Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant cause of hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality worldwide. This disease imparts a global economic burden on the healthcare system and is expected to increase in prevalence over the next 30 years. However, COPD still currently remains underdiagnosed. This presentation will outline the current guidelines and evidence-based recommendations on the diagnosis and management of COPD. Additionally, a case-based approach will be used to apply evidence-based recommendations to outline the diagnosis, treatment, and management of COPD, including early recognition and treatment of exacerbations.
Topics covered in this course include:
- The impact of COPD in the United States and globally
- Assessing, diagnosing, and managing COPD
- Possible therapies and non-pharmacological approaches to COPD management
- Preventing, recognizing, and treating acute exacerbations of COPD
