This version of our 45-Hour Advanced Pharmacology Course may be used to meet recertification renewal continuing education requirements in the state of California. This course may not be used to meet the initial California Board of Registered Nursing NP requirements for furnishing/prescriptive authority.

Barkley & Associates, Inc. is accredited by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as an approved provider of nurse practitioner continuing education. Since all state boards of nursing accept AANP credit, this course is approved for continuing education in all states.

After completing this 30-session educational package, NPs will have enhanced skills to use patient assessment data in determining the most appropriate pharmacotherapeutic regimens for optimal patient outcomes. The principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are covered in detail. Numerous drug types used in the treatment of conditions affecting all physiological systems are emphasized. Analyses of state and federal regulations and organizational furnishing guidelines are included to encourage a safe and informed prescribing practice.

Course Objectives:

(Adapted from the California Board of Registered Nursing Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number Application)

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Utilize health assessment data in identifying appropriate therapeutic medical regimens, including drugs and/or devices
  2. Integrate knowledge of pharmacokinetics when developing a therapeutic regimen to maximize therapeutic effectiveness while minimizing adverse reactions
  3. Use knowledge of pharmacodynamics to observe and understand the effects of drugs and/or devices to predict an optimal patient response
  4. Evaluate the response and compliance of the patient to drugs and/or devices and implement appropriate action, as needed
  5. Provide appropriate patient education regarding furnished/prescribed drugs and/or devices
  6. Furnish/prescribe drugs and/or devices pursuant to applicable laws, codes and/or regulations, (including knowledge of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations), Health and Safety Codes, and the Federal Register
  7. Examine appropriate guidelines for the pharmacological management of selected health care syndromes/diseases commonly encountered with awareness of patients’ nutrition, culture, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status
  8. Use knowledge and awareness of the role of herbal and natural remedies while treating disease states

How It Works

  1. Log in at www.NPcourses.com
  2. Go to My Account in the upper right corner and click on Courses.
  3. Locate your Course in the list and click on it.
  4. Click on Access Course to proceed.
  5. The sequence of lectures has been grouped into 3 sections with 3 accompanying exams.
  6. For continuity, the course must be followed in order. Participants are not allowed to proceed until each session has been completed.
  7. PowerPoint handouts are available for every lecture. We strongly recommend that you download and print each lecture’s handout so that you may highlight and take notes as you view each video.
  8. It is very important to spend time studying all PowerPoint handouts before attempting to take an exam. Each exam includes 50 items to complete in 60 minutes. Participants have a maximum of 3 attempts to pass each exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  9. After successful completion of the last exam, participants must complete a Course Evaluation.
  10. Upon submission of the Course Evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will appear for you to print and/or save in PDF format. We strongly recommend that you print or save the certificate immediately, as your certificate will not be stored in your account indefinitely.
  11. With the intent of mastering important advanced pharmacology principles to maintain clinical currency, it is expected that students will take adequate time to carefully review, thoroughly study, and learn material to satisfactorily pass each exam. Therefore, this 45-hour course must be taken over a minimum of 10 calendar days to receive continuing education credit.
