Regardless of one’s background in 12 Lead ECG interpretation, this presentation targets all NPs to increase confidence and proficiency in clinical practice. This session begins by reviewing the foundational principles of 12 Lead ECGs and then builds on these to guide the participant in expanding their expertise for identifying a variety of 12 Lead ECG patterns including inferior, septal, anterior, lateral and posterior infarctions.

Radiology Review: From Novice to Expert
Radiology Review: From Novice to Expert

Most NPs have a basic understanding of x-ray interpretation, but many question the “why and how” of radiology, especially with more complicated patient films. This two-part session takes the participant from a basic understanding of the shades of black and white on an x-ray film to the ability to identify pneumonia, CHF, cardiomegaly, bowel obstruction, spine injuries, Salter Harris fractures, and much more. Within 2 ½ hours, it’s from novice to expert with radiology in acute care!

4 contact hours of continuing education (which includes .75 hours of pharmacology, and 4 hours of emergency care procedural skills)

Mechanical Ventilation Boot Camp
Mechanical Ventilation Boot Camp

Designed for both intensivists and non-intensivists, this boot camp will provide practitioners the ability to understand the “how, why, and what else” of mechanical ventilation.

Select patients, such as those with underlying obstructive or restrictive lung disease, complicate ventilator regulation. Identification and management of various mechanical ventilation clinical challenges such as these will be covered to enhance the practitioner’s decision-making ability in ventilator management.

Hot Topics in Shock Trauma

Aggressive, evidence-based care of the shock trauma patient is essential for sustaining life in the critically ill. This session will address three novel innovations that offer additional strategies in the process of shock trauma patient resuscitation, which have broad implications for all nurse practitioners.

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA), endovascular repair of penetrating and blunt vascular injuries, and molecular absorbent recirculating system (MARS) will each be discussed. Indications, underlying principles, advantages, and contrasts to previous treatment options will also be addressed.

1.75 contact hours of continuing education (which includes 1 hour of pharmacology, and 1.25 hour of emergency care procedural skills)

Fluid Responsiveness and Resuscitation
Fluid Responsiveness and Resuscitation

Fluid resuscitation is a vital element in acute care. Since the advent of early goal-directed therapy, there has been an emphasis on aggressive fluid resuscitation in patients with shock. However, there is great variability in practice regarding fluid challenges (FCs), leading to under- or over-hydration of the compromised patient. Such decisions can potentially have a detrimental impact on patient outcomes. This session reviews the concepts of fluid responsiveness by utilizing six evidence-based principles to guide effective resuscitation. Included is a discussion of the use of chest x-ray, central venous pressure, and ultrasound as marginal indicators of fluid status.

ECMO in the Critically Ill Adult

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy (ECMO) is a rescue strategy to support patients in severe acute respiratory or cardiac failure who don’t respond to traditional methods of treatment. Indications for ECMO continue to expand for both respiratory and cardiac failure. This session will present an overview of ECMO support (WHAT) and indications for ECMO, helping to define appropriate patients for selection and triage for early ECMO cannulation (WHEN). We will review how ECMO works in both cardiac and respiratory failure, including cannulation strategies for each etiology of failure (HOW).
