Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a complicated but effective tool in improving prognoses for patients in critical care situations. This highly detailed CE offering will prepare you to make efficient decisions about when to safely use ECMO in critical care situations. The technical information in the presentation is supported by realistic case studies and intricate decision trees on when to use ECMO, allowing you to practice your critical discernment skills as you learn. After completing this session, you will be able to understand the criteria for ECMO use and describe ECMO cannulation techniques. You will also be able to evaluate patients supported by ECMO for frequently occurring complications.

This presentation includes information on the following topics:

  • Determining which patients are candidates for ECMO
  • Statistics on the prognostic benefits of appropriate ECMO use
  • Mechanical components of ECMO and how to determine the source of a mechanical problem
  • Considerations for weaning and hypoxemia

How It Works

  1. Log in at www.NPcourses.com
  2. Go to My Account in the upper right corner and click on Courses.
  3. Locate your Course in the list and click on it.
  4. Click on Access Course to proceed.
  5. PowerPoint handouts are available for every lecture under “Materials.” We strongly recommend that you download and print each lecture’s handout so that you may highlight and take notes as you view each video.
  6. Please note that there is information covered in the video lectures that will not be on the handouts, so you must watch the video in its entirety. It is very important to spend time studying all PowerPoint handouts and to watch all course lecture(s) before attempting to take the required quiz.
  7. Each quiz includes 5 items to complete in 10 minutes. Participants have a maximum of 3 attempts to pass each exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  8. After successful completion of the quiz, participants must complete a Course Evaluation.
  9. Upon submission of the Course Evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will appear for you to print and/or save in PDF format. We strongly recommend that you print or save the certificate immediately, as your certificate will not be stored in your account indefinitely.
