Hot Neuro Diagnoses in Acute Care Practice:
From Concussion to Herniation

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. To minimize the negative health and socioeconomic impacts of TBI, timely, focused, and high quality practitioner care from the moment of insult is imperative. This session will begin with a review of mechanism of injury, initial stabilization, and concussion evaluation and management. Radiologic imaging and interactive case studies will be utilized to overview the gamut of primary brain trauma identification with clinical exam findings. Pathophysiology of secondary brain injury with application of guideline-based evaluation techniques and pharmacologic intervention will be discussed. Whether TBI is uncovered on the athletic field or the critical care unit, participants will leave with practical knowledge to maximize prompt identification with appropriate intervention to minimize secondary brain injury and long term sequelae.
