The treatment of blood disorders is complex in any circumstance, and when your patient is in a critical condition, making the right management decision is key. Supported by informative graphics and flowcharts, this engaging course will equip you with the necessary knowledge to manage hematologic complications in your patients. This session gives a detailed breakdown of the roles of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, then provides a detailed discussion of the complications that occur when any of these cell types are out of balance.

After completing this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Identify the characteristics of a leukemoid reaction and discuss the basics of immunotherapy
  • Discuss complications from reduced production or increased destruction of red blood cells
  • Understand the role of platelets and navigate heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
  • Understand hemopoiesis, cytokines, and the innate immune system

  2. Go to My Account in the upper right corner and click on Courses.
  3. Locate your Course in the list and click on it.
  4. Click on Access Course to proceed.

  6. Please note that there is information covered in the video lectures that will not be on the handouts, so you must watch the video in its entirety. It is very important to spend time studying all PowerPoint handouts and to watch all course lecture(s) before attempting to take the required quiz.
  7. Each quiz includes 5 items to complete in 10 minutes. Participants have a maximum of 3 attempts to pass each exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  8. After successful completion of the quiz, participants must complete a Course Evaluation.
  9. Upon submission of the Course Evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will appear for you to print and/or save in PDF format. We strongly recommend that you print or save the certificate immediately, as your certificate will not be stored in your account indefinitely.
