Top Pediatric Prescriptions

In this talk, the top prescribed pediatric medications will be discussed. Of the top twenty drugs prescribed, most of them fall into three classifications: Anti-infectives, drugs for asthma/allergy, and drugs for minor pain and fever relief. Each of these classifications will be discussed, as will specific drugs, with respect to safe use, side effects, and contraindications. New agents and new black box warnings will be presented.

Specific topics covered in this talk include:

  • Acute otitis media: When to treat and when to wait

  • Update for asthma, with implementation of step treatment

  • Prescribing guidelines for acetaminophen and ibuprofen

  • Indications for pediatric psychiatric medications, including newer agents for ADHD, psychosis, depression, and autism



Top Gerontological Drugs

This presentation examines the physiologic changes that make the elderly vulnerable to adverse drug outcomes, as well the drugs most likely to cause such problems. Drugs on the Beers list that are most associated with a high risk of adverse effects are also reviewed. Over-the-counter and herbal preparations that are known to interact with prescription medications and pose a risk for polypharmacy are discussed, as are means to handle this issue with patients. Treatment of common problems in the elderly, including osteoarthritis, benign prostatic hypertrophy, dementia, insomnia, hypertension, and coagulopathies are addressed, along with drugs of abuse in this population.

Exploring the Top 20 Drugs

This talk explores the current top 20 prescribed drugs by their categories of use for indications ranging from cardiovascular disease, pain, infection, endocrine disorders, and others. Commonly prescribed drugs are discussed with respect to their mechanism, safety, and special populations for use. A brief discussion of the top 20 street and abused drugs is also included, with surprising correlations between the two groups noted.
