Antibiotics Update

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed—and sometimes overprescribed—drugs. This presentation will begin with a discussion of the classifications and characteristics of antibacterials. The risks of antibiotic overuse and emergence of resistance will be explained. Treatment options for resistant organisms, specifically MRSA, VRE, and VISA, and the pathology these organisms cause, will be discussed. Finally, the causative organisms of commonly encountered bacterial infections will be described, and the treatment options for these infections will be addressed. Strategies for improving patient adherence and outcomes and reducing resistance will also be stressed.

Included in this talk is information on:

  • Describe the common classifications of antibacterials with respect to mechanism of action and use

  • Discuss the emergence of resistance of certain bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus and Enterococcus, and treatment strategies

  • Understand the common treatment strategies for typical infectious diseases encountered in clinical practice, including acute otitis media, STIs, sinusitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonias
