Advanced Pharmacology is an ever-changing field. Standard safety precautions must be followed, but as new research and clinical experience broaden our knowledge, changes in treatment and drug therapy may become necessary or appropriate. Readers are advised to check the most current product information provided by the manufacturer of each drug to be administered to verify the recommended dose, the method and duration of administration and contraindications. It is the responsibility of the licensed prescriber, relying on expertise and knowledge of the patient, to determine dosages and the best treatment for each individual patient. Neither Barkley & Associates nor any contributing authors assume any responsibility for any injury and/or damage to persons or property arising from this publication.

This presentation begins with the most common reasons for a patient to present in the acute care, urgent care and emergent settings, followed by an in-depth discussion of hot pharmacologic topics. Newer therapies to treat an array of acute conditions of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems are covered. Updates for pain management and conscious sedation are compared. Finally, up-to-date pharmacologic management of the overdose patient is addressed.

Included in this talk is information on:

  • Main respiratory ailments in the acute care setting and how to manage them including acute asthma exacerbations, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, dyspnea, influenza, angioedema, and others.

  • Pharmacologic treatment of cardiovascular complaints including acute coronary syndromes, N/STEMI, heart failure and stroke.

  • Updates in pain management and conscious sedation for the trauma patient.

  • Information on new drugs for diabetes control in the acute patient and as "send-home" drugs in the patient with comorbid cardiovascular conditions.

  • Management of the patient who has been exposed to overdose of prescription agents or drugs-of-abuse.
