This comprehensive continuing education blitz focuses on updating pharmacology knowledge in clinical practice. Sessions explore evidence based outcomes and recent trends involving pharmacotherapeutic choices and diagnostic decision-making. Using a pathophysiological approach, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic controversies for an array of topics such as an in-depth look at the most common prescriptions, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, community resistant pathogens, pain management, prescribing errors, and polypharmacy are presented. Pharmacology considerations highlighting specific specialty populations including men’s health and ethnopharmacology are also addressed, incorporating case study trivia throughout the course.
Exploring the Top Twenty Drugs!
This presentation explores the current top twenty prescribed drugs by their categories of use – for indications ranging from cardiovascular disease, pain, infection, and endocrine disorders. Commonly prescribed drugs are discussed with respect to their mechanism, safety, and special populations for use. A brief discussion of the top twenty street and abused drugs is also included—surprising correlations between the two groups are noted.
Prescribing Controlled
Substances In this offering, the nurse practitioner will be given valuable information regarding the prescribing of controlled substances, including rules for prescribing these agents, a discussion of state and federal regulations dictating their use, and tips for safely treating patients with these drugs. Additionally, classes of these drugs are discussed in detail, including updates on the opiates, sedatives, stimulants, GI drugs and endocrine agents that are currently controlled. For each class of drug, effects, side effects and notable drug interactions are discussed.

PSYCHOpharmacology Update
This session explores the latest drugs for depression, psychosis, anxiety, bipolar affective disorder and other psychiatric syndromes. For many of these agents, efficacy has recently been improved or in some cases, questioned. Such controversies are examined keeping in mind the best treatment outcomes for the patient. Additionally, side effects and medication compliance are discussed, as these greatly impact the efficacy of all psychotherapeutic drugs.
What’s Hot and What to Watch!
In this presentation, the nurse practitioner will learn about new drugs recently introduced to the market for a variety of indications including pain, infection, hypertension and endocrine diseases. Tips for how to best monitor the market for drug updates are included in this content.
