Gerontological Drugs
(2 Hours
of Pharmacology)
This
presentation examines the
physiologic changes that make the
elderly vulnerable to adverse drug
outcomes, as well the drugs most
likely to cause such problems.
Drugs on the Beers list that are
most associated with a high risk
of adverse effects are also
reviewed. Over-the-counter and
herbal preparations that are known
to interact with prescription
medications and pose a risk for
polypharmacy are discussed, as are
means to handle this issue with
patients. Treatment of common
problems in the elderly, including
osteoarthritis, benign prostatic
hypertrophy, dementia, insomnia,
hypertension, and coagulopathies
are addressed, along with drugs of
abuse in this population.
